Saddam's trial will not be fair, says United Nations

Yes I know the UN says it won't be fair... I am surprised to.

Now here is the key to why I think the UN is just out for attention

John Case, the UN's human rights chief in Iraq, said the murder of two defence lawyers, continued threats against judges, lawyers and witnesses and weaknesses in the Iraqi justice system had caused grave doubts about the trial's legitimacy.

So in other words.... EVERYONE in every aspect of the trial is threatened

How does this make the trial unfair to Saddam's ability to achieve a just sentance?

Something for me in a Christmas/Birthday setting

For anyone who hasn't already got me one. Here are some nice tee shirts

I took a drink from Cardinal Martini's site to

And I didn't really care at all About Rosa Parks being in the Statuary Hall until he pointed out to me some of the idiotic comments made about her.

And here's Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.):

"When Rosa Parks takes her place in Statuary Hall, she takes Frederick Douglass ... Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth with her," Jackson said in a statement. "She takes with her the countless, nameless people of African descent who from slavery to today sacrifice for an America many never lived to see."

No.

Frederick Douglas deserves to be in on his own Merit. Mayhaps a certain Lt.Governor in Maryland can work something out with that.

And I agree with him about the bias for the modern (I saw a list of the top 100 pop culture Icons of all time that had Oprah as #1 to which i called Shenanigins)

Rosa Parks is a worthy person, but I don't think she meets the bar for that level of immortality

Me vs. Josh of West Wing Fame

Yahoo news is a great and wonderful service I put in a subject line and it spits me out some news stories. So I got the following from the HuffenPuff Marshmallow and I am struck with the following bit of wisdom for the HuffenPuffers (and anyone who agrees with this HuffenPuffer).

“Be careful what you wish for.”

How many times have “Progressive”/”Leftist”/”Liberal”/Democrat politico’s called for the removal of the tax exempt status of Churches and political movements that supported republicans for violating their non-partisan tax exempt status in spirit ( if not in fact). Well congratulations some one listened to you… and unfortunately it wasn’t one of your ilk. So this guarantees a future use of the IRS as a political weapon by a future Democratic administration.

Political leftist groups have been making these complaints for some time… And the right political sphere in the pulpit is far smarter. They veil their call to action to their communities (by and large) in a much more subtle manner and dodge the bullet. People have been visiting houses of worship with tape recorders and this is simply horrendous. But let me address however the points of theology here because they do deserve repeating.

“Perhaps the best response to the tragedy of 9/11 was a preemptive war against a country that had not nothing to do with the attacks. Tens of thousands of deaths later, perhaps it is still the right decision.
But it is not Christian.”
Why not? Is it because you kill people in a war? Is it Christian to sit and rub ones hands and pray a butcher will not continue to rape, murder, torture, and kill people Christian? Is it Christian to say “Now Saddam if you don’t let those inspectors in we will write you such a stern letter.”

You see this is the real world, and in the real world easy ethical and spiritual answers to questions like that don’t exist. This is even saying that George Bush was acting as a Christian, and not as a secular leader in doing his duty to protect his nation.
You can make a Christian argument for the War in Iraq as a just war just as you can make a Christian argument for a just war in Germany or in Korea. And you can make just as Christian an argument that it –isn’t- just. Because Christianity has never been uniform in its approach to human society and by making this argument just as you made the argument that evangelical political churches get targeted by the IRS you end up with a future backfire far worse then this one.
“Perhaps it is good economics to give me, an actor on a television show, over a quarter of a million dollars in tax relief over the last five years as the poverty rate climbs, as we burden our children with structural budget deficits and cut services for our most vulnerable citizens.
But it is not Christian.”
Tax cuts (with fiscal restraint by the government) lead to robust economic growth. Tax cuts (without fiscal restraint) lead to average economic growth.
Do we get people out of poverty by wishing it so? Or do we get them out of poverty by providing them –jobs-.
I am sure no one needs an answer to that. Nor does anyone need an answer to how private groups all around the world have consistently proven more effective then the government at not only providing the services, but by getting people in to provide services.
Is it Christian to throw money down a rat hole? Is it Christian to waste people’s money when their spending the money with their own choice (with the free will god gave them) will do more good for society and those who suffer?
Because when people start to give to aid the poverty of others in private it builds community in things like churches. Which will build a community where people know, love, and care about each other again which I believe –IS- a Christian value.
“Perhaps the Death Penalty is an acceptable way to punish criminals.
But it is not Christian.”
Are you saying Christ is a pacifist? He told his followers if they did not have a sword they needed to sell the clothes on their back to get one.
There is a reasonable argument that the death penalty is Christian, just as there is a reasonable argument it is –not- Christian.
I know you are on The West Wing so you think your opinion has some political validity so let’s take a rational realistic argument.
Calls to silence the Republican oriented Christian churches have lead to a real silencing of a leftist oriented Christian church.
How do you think labeling one set of politics Christian or Not Christian by theology will work?
And while we are at it look at the people fleeing the Episcopal Church which has studied liturgy to worship Christ as female. Again tell me how these views have been working out for you in the long term

I went over to Drink in some Vodka Pundit

And I came across this gem of a post. And I have a roomate who is far more the video gamer then I am.

I've stuck my foot in trying to play the X-box and I have to admit the complexity of the controler gets to me. This could just be like me and fishing and I'd get more into it if I found a game with less complexity.

But I have 6 buttons with Blitz the Leauge (4 keypad buttons and two trigers) a direction pad and two optional direction pads.

I have to find a way to integrate all those into my brain.

Old 8 and 16 bit game platforms... not so much. the controls were easier to plug into my brain.

But watching Kevin play Blitz the Leauge is often more intresting ( especially on Monday Night Football nights) then the game itself.

Drudge has this blurb from time. What I wonder is how come Spielberg can try to sell the Israeli/Palestinian feud as a quagmire when he didn't interview the Israelis or the Palestinians about it

"I'm always in favor of Israel responding strongly when it's threatened. At the same time, a response to a response doesn't really solve anything. It just creates a perpetual-motion machine," Spielberg says. "There's been a quagmire of blood for blood for many decades in that region. Where does it end? How can it end?"

Money shot on Hurricane Katrina

Here the folks at Al Press try to blame the white house on Katrina

The 100,000 pages of documents that Blanco sent to Congress on Friday include a series of letters starting with one Blanco sent President Bush a day before the hurricane hit.

"I have determined that this incident will be of such severity and magnitude that effective response will be beyond the capabilities of the state and the affected local governments and that supplementary federal assistance will be necessary," Blanco wrote.

Documentary on a Democratic voting constituency

This was premired in Turin, filmed in canada... but really all they needed to do was go to Chicago

Homecoming's agitprop premise scariest: In an election year, dead veterans of the current conflict crawl out of their graves and stagger single-mindedly to voting booths so they can eject the president who sent them to fight a war sold on "horseshit and elbow grease."

(( and yes I know it is some sad anti-bush propeganda... just dead people and voting with chicago is always funny))

The Nice League

You are 43% Factor A, and 61% Factor B. Figure that out.

TNL, baby woo!

In a way, you're perfect. People can come to you for a good laugh, an interesting discussion, or spare change. They probably love you, but just aren't in love with you. That's the handicap of your league.

If you want to play hard and with other leagues, you have to sex it up a little bit. Don't be afraid of rejection just because you get it so much. You can't win if you don't play.

Don't tell anyone in the other leagues this, but yours is secretly the best one.

TNL = The Nice League

THL = The Hot League

TBL = The Beautiful League

More claims about the Iraqi WMD

(HT: Searchlight Crusade)

If this blog is true, then our government has a whole lot to answer for. And from my experience with the US government and local government this seems entirely probable.

And sadly A book I like to

take the WHAT BAD BOOK ARE YOU test.

and go to mewing.net. not as good as reading a good book, but way better than a bad one.

I saw this on Sully

And I mulled over posting about this story. That was of course till I took a second look at the "we all have aids" website.

The WE ALL HAVE AIDS Campaign is an on-going commitment by fashion designer Kenneth Cole and like-minded leaders to ensure HIV/AIDS, and the destructive STIGMA associated with it, remain at the forefront of global consciousness

And how are they going to fight that stigma... why Tee Shirts

Limited edition WE ALL HAVE AIDS T-shirts will be sold at ALL Barney’s, Theory, Scoop, Louis of Boston and Kenneth Cole New York stores in the U.S., Holt Renfrew in Canada and Selfridges in London.

Yes I am sure people in Ritzy botiques and High end coffee shops will help eliminate the stigma of aids

but wait ( sadly) there is more stupid

The launch effort includes a 51 foot tree decorated with 800 symbolic WE ALL HAVE AIDS ornaments,
on display in New York City’s Bryant Park throughout the holidays. Bryant Park will also host an arresting art installation featuring a life size print of the image and the actual cement footprints of the coalition of leaders, as well as those of other leaders not photographed.

Believe in the Power of Santa: Or Get nothing

((Taking a line from my favorite Foamy the squirrel toon I am going to talk about Christmas today.))

I am not a Christian, I don’t believe some guy named Jesus was born in what is today Israel over 2000 years ago. Nor do I believe the religion being promoted in his name has any higher claim to my soul …or for that matter any claim to my soul. But I do believe in the power of Santa, and that’s why I want people to leave Christmas alone.

Jews celebrate Christmas, some celebrated it with Chanukah and some just celebrate Christmas. We’ve all watched that movie with Jimmie Stewart and we all remember the famous words of Tiny Tim. If you live in the United States then Christmas is all around you. And this next part to you folks who believe in Jesus isn’t going to be pretty so bare with me.

All of us in the Non-Christian horde don’t celebrate Christmas for religious reason then why do we celebrate it? The answer is simple the spirit of Christmas which still lives, even though in the Pre-Christmas moment we become blinded by the commercialism of the day. In that single moment there is giving, caring, and communing with another person. The holiday of Christmas as it is practiced brings out all the best in human beings. And it does it without a direct “This holiday is brought to you by Jesus” message.

Christmas is in this age of fallen families, of broken divorced homes one moment when the family however torn can come back together. Even the Christmas mythology we teach to children in this modern day appeals to our better natures.

The number of books, TV shows, movies and the like influenced by Christmas and a sense they need to appeal to our better natures during that time of year is good.

Christmas is a secular holiday Christians. Just like Halloween, Valentines Day (formerly St. Valentine’s day), Easter, Mardis Gras (yes Mardis Gras), and even Thanksgiving. These holidays that all held religious orientation and origin have all become even in their practice by Christians secular affairs and that is a good thing. All of these holidays form strong aspects of our culture and appeal to the innocent natures of children. They help bring people and families together. Their impact is universal because Christians have brought them into the secular square. Their positive appeal helps make our society better. Aspects of the holiday show the bad, but that too is good because we all decry the gluttony and excesses of the holiday season as a lesson for the rest of our year.

So Christians deal with it…. The culture of “Western” societies still is built on the foundation of Christianity. So the appeal of those holidays will be part of every citizen in those societies. You can have your Christian celebrations of them but keep in mind if we like something you enjoy in those celebrations don’t be surprised we won’t be celebrating it in the non Christian sphere.

Now that I’ve said my bit to the Christians it is now time for either the liberal (theology and politics) Christians and Non Christians out there. Merry Christmas isn’t offensive. Its based on an assumption that isn’t universal ( as we attest to) but some one trying to be nice and extending a blessing he feels is great shouldn’t be told to go F*** Himself. You can say “Happy Holidays” to him. You could say “And I hope you have a Merry Christmas.” And then you go to the aisle and look for the sale for your own winter gift giving.

If you want say Happy Chanukah or Happy Kwanza… or whatever holiday to him to.

Kids having anything short of; A Cross, a bible, a “Jesus is the reason for the season” sign, or a nativity scene in the communal part of their school space should be allowed to go nuts with whatever decorations the school can afford. If it’s the kids private space let them put up anything that isn’t overtly offensive “Non Christians burn in hell” they want that is intended in good spirit.

You want to put a nativity scene with a big Menorah in a public park fine…Muslims want to put something up for Ramadan to great.

These things don’t hurt… they expose us to the reality that people of different cultures exist.

Drink your Eggnog, sit on Santa’s lap and have a Merry Christmas.

And I hope Santa is as good to you as he’ll probably be to me.

A shoe I was waiting to drop

From an email i have from an Israeli email list ( off of Arutz-7... no linkage that I can produce yet)

There was some talk on how the political movement in Israel was becoming Young Turks Vs. Old Turks. Talk of how Sharon was bolstered by his young turks and Peres kept his down......

well now we see the politics are going to be more generational then peace in their orientation.

1. Peres Quits Labor, Joins Sharon
By Hillel Fendel

Shimon Peres, former five-time Prime Minister, including Acting PM, has retired from the Knesset and the Labor Party - though he refuses to release his hold on the "corners of the altar."
In exchange for Peres' support for Ariel Sharon's Kadima party, Sharon has promised him a senior ministry portfolio, in the event that Sharon forms the next government. Peres will not run for a Knesset seat on behalf of the Kadima party.

We all know The Vulture ( and Israeli nickname for Peres) will take the foriegn ministry post for Sharon if he wins.

Peres lost narrowly to Amir Peretz three weeks ago in the race for Chairman of the Labor Party. Though Peres has lost almost all of the elections in which he has run during his political career, this one appeared to be particularly shocking for him, for two reasons: He had been favored to win by a large margin, and Peretz's approach on many issues is strikingly different than that of Peres.

The Young Turks have pushed out the two lions of the old guard. Instead of accepting defeat gracefully they have decided once more to try to inject their generational politics into political leadership of the nation.

That is the real story, Old age vs youth

Buisness model's in Pajamas

Dean Esmay defends Pajama's Media/OSM/Pajamas Media and their buisness model.

Here is the problem with what Dean is trying to sell us on.

Buisness model of trying to put Blogs into print media isn't a good fit because at the moment Blogs are about analysis. Very few Blogs do good honest reporting (LGF and INDC Journal are two which got me into reading and then later blogging for example). But even when Blogs report what we report is driven by the larger media "What the media fails to report" or "The Media said X but it is really Y"

None of these things make for good print Media. Commentary pages are few and far between in this great big world of ours. And not many folks get to be on those pages.

Furthermore Print media is reducing in size... growing smaller. Now if blogging were made part of a true open source reporting ( Imagine a news site that was like Wikipedia...though that would be insanely a pain in the buttocks to deal with) platform then we might have something for an online media venture.

We however don't.

A alliance seems actually better with Talk Radio, a marriage not only made in heaven but one where people can use some pointers to story...some commentary... and potentially ( yes thats right) better coverage from the blogger. Making a database of Bloggers to provide for a given topic to help people who write these shows on radio ( and maybe even comedy shows on Tv) would be a product that makes sense

the leverage into print media or online-print media makes no sense

****UPDATE****

I am not saying in here that PJM is bad. I am saying I don't see the logic behind their product. And I've yet to see some one who can sell the product in a way that makes sense.

Thats why I think PJM won't work.

My second post on Sully today

*I* not being catholic find myself surprised to defend the church from some one who was in it. Sully isn't happy holy mother church is banning homosexuals from the priesthood. Others have pointed out the painful reality that folks like sully don't want to acknowledge (that the priest sex abuse scandal is about abusive homosexual sex and not pedophilia.) So I'm not going to go into that in great detail here I am going to make a story. My story is going to explain the logic of why the church is doing what it is doing.I am not endorsing the Catholic church's position in any way shape or form I am pointing out the logical and reasonable nature of the position. This position isn't one of bigotry but one may feel church teachings set this problem up.... And *In the US* I'd disagree. US catholics regularly dismiss church teaching when it suits them. It is a problem of people feeling they have to be orthodox to the teachings of the church when no one else is. Thats what i view as a more root cause.

Take a young catholic boy
now for whatever reason ( genetics, nuturing, nature+ nuture, aliens with anal probes, etc) the young man is gay.
The young man is aware his feelings of attraction are different then everyone elses and different then what the church says is upright and godly.
The young man feels very bad about that and tries to repress his sexuality. But lets say the young man doesn't have a very good inner ability to repress.
So the young man goes through fits of homosexual outbursts then repression with a side order of depression.
And lets say this works around till he gets into high school. The young man being a very devoted catholic prays and prays for help in keeping his desires down. He decides to go into the church as a way to keep the genie in the bottle. He isn't alone as some one trying to keep the gay inside at the seminary as he finds a gay subculture there... a subculture that hides itself but makes him feel alive. He probably even has homosexual sex at these parties because of his pattern of sexual behavior.but he still tries to put that genie in the bottle.
Only, he doesn't. Now he is a priest so if he picks some one up at a gay bar or the like and gets caught his career is ruined. But unlike those whose career is ruined normally this has the added bonus of making him feel cast out of the community of god, shaming his family, and bringing shame and discredit on the church. So he picks from among his flock and among the weakest and most pliable to the church in his flock.

The Children

What would solve this problem? Psychological screening of canidates going into the priesthood. Some homosexuals are entering the priesthood for healthy reasons.

Why can't they screen people? Because hardly anyone wants to be a priest anymore.

So how can the church stop people who have compulsive and addictive sexual drives, who happen to be homosexuals, from being priests?

Ban all homosexuals from the priesthood and try to make it sound like a really good doctrinal position.

Sully of course could see this better if he wasn't (a) catholic or (b) homosexual.
Since he is Catholic he has a presentation in his mind of the Catholic church that is unrealistic to reality. And since he is homosexual, like most people I know who are homosexual, he won't address the fact the bulk of priest sex abuse -is- homosexual sex abuse.

Perspective, its a big flaw in Andrew Sullivan's presentation.

Good Job Sully

Sully addresses an opinion finally that a lot of us here in the land of blog have about him. But instead of debating the substance of the allegation Sully re-directs the allegation in such a way as to attack the credibility of thoses who attack him.

Sully wasn't happy with the Bush spending like a drunken sailor reality that has continued to this day. No conservative in the world of blog was.... so does Sully want a cookie for that? He thought the President and his team haven't run Iraq correctly... do you want a second cookie?

Up until BUSH backed the FMA Andrew like most of us grumbled but didn't make it wall-to-wall Anti-Bush.

But Andrew has to make it about torture because to him that is the best way to vilify the President (and discredit anyone who challenges him)

But the notion that I would be finding excuses for torture if Bush had refused to back the FMA is so vile an attack on my integrity it deserves a response.

But you didn't respond to a real attack on your Integrity Andrew, you created an attack to try to make yourself seem the white knight.

You know a lot of other folks in the Conservative World of Blog aren't to keen on the coercive techniques that the CIA is allegedly using (The evidence that Abu Ghraib was part of a grand conspiracy is truely pathetic, and much of the allegations about Gitmo that have made the news also fail to meet the torture metric). But at the moment we have to wait until we get a shot at seeing if the story has some more legs.

Many of your "inside tips" don't meet a smell test to me and if I had your access I'd probably not run with them. But you do because -YOU- have an axe to grind with the President. That is the real allegation Andrew. That you will promote any story that makes the president look bad outside of reality or perspective. To say those who don't agree with you "Support" torture is dishonest.... Some folks are carrying water on "coercive interogation" but most people who call you on being hurt by the President *I* have seen don't carry that water. We tend to talk about how very sad you've become. How your writing has become largely incoherent whenever you start to chew on the President.

And the reason this charge has legs has less even to do with the president and more to do with the utter greed in which you have begged for money, and then got more money then you ever needed and sat on it.

Your "donations" make everyone view you as a selfish person Andrew, so it then becomes very easy after what you have done to believe that you could quite selfishly put an ego hurt into your politics and find a passion to "speak the truth to power" that you simply didn't have before.
