I find myself somewhat amused as being the only Florida Mason who posted in response to the situtation.
I will try to be as Masonic as possible, and to put this out in a way that is consumable by you Non-Masons out there.
Brother Tim has for the last few years, been the guy who has pushed for more and larger scale Masonic Internet pressence online. This is a work that is to his credit, in my personal opinion.
Amongst the world of Online Masons (those brothers who circulate online on a very regular basis) Certain topics go round and round more then once. This is normal with all online forums so what Worshipful Brother Bryce put out as an editorial and opinion article is not something anyone hasn't seen once or twice in an online forum. The problem is this article went against certain sacred standards that have always been that way (a situation which many inside the masonic community are aware of in a variety of fields of endeavor. Brother Tim in a responsible editorial way place a rebuttal article in his publication.
I think ideas such a "World Congress" of Masons, a theme often seen in some of the most ludicrous Anti-Masonic diatribes and some pointing out the quality of the clothes of the Grand Lodge in ways that I've heard more then once offline from Brothers. These two ideas lead to a shutting down of Brother Tim's activities.
Brother Tim has an excellent mind for the Florida Digest of Masonic law from the few times I have seen him post it. I trust his interpretation was a reasonable interpretation of the Grand Masters edict.
I do not know If this was the intent of the Grand Master, and frankly I hope it wasn't. Because some of the projects Brother Tim was working on I think aided the Masonic community as a whole far more then a single opinion article damaged it. One such project was a recent email list where Brother Tim was stimulating discussion amongst brothers on future legislation to come before the Grand Lodge of Florida. I think that while such a subject matter could be delicate with proper moderation to ensure no Masonic Law or Edict is violated the craft would hold a far greater benifit from the project.
When a person is in the position the M:.W:. is, sometimes the kind of thoughtful one on one discourse that would occur if it was a honest dispute and disagreement between two men cannot be done. I definately respect the Grand Master's sense that a respect for the insitution and offices of the Grand Lodge must be upheld. I feel that another course of action to get to that point could have been possible, and had I been in the Grand Masters place I would have acted differently. But I understand and respect why the Grand Master made the choice he did, even if I would have taken a different course of action.
I do feel, and until I saw some one else blogging on the subject, that pushing the envelope of this issue would be improper. I do feel however as a Florida Mason an Obligation to say that Both of my Brothers within my Grand Lodge Family have from my knowledge acted in what they feel is the betterment of the Craft. It is unfortunate that these two men disagreed on that end, and I hope that M:.W:. and Brother Tim can resolve this dispute and Brother Tim can continue his excellent service to the craft in Florida by spreading Masonic Light in an online forum.
Another Florida Brother who reads my blog, and whom I have respected a great deal disagrees with me. R:.W:. is of another generation then I and his understanding of the Masonic obligation, and understanding of what that means online is different then mine. I respect him as a leader in the craft, and I disagree with him. I do think however situations like this could be resolved better if their were less grey areas that the thoughts of one generation and another could get lost within the mists of murky modern english language.
I think that is the kind of Masonic leadership that could take a situation which has ruffled some Masonic Feathers outside the State of Florida and create a positive solution which would benifit the community of soverign Grand Lodge's all around the world.
When a brother intends well but errors through improper knowledge, I feel correcting his error is far more important then punishing him for his error. If a brother does not intend well that is entirely another matter. If a brother knows better and errors in a serious manner, that is a more signifigant problem and then I feel edicts should be used.
But the Purple and Gold does not yet rest on my neck, and If it ever does I will show some of how I think the Grand Lodge should be governed.
